An Experimental Study on the Histological Change of the Patella of Adult Rabbit following Acrylie Bone Cement Fixation


Abstract
Recently in the operation of the total hip or knee replacement, the plastic cup and metalic stem being -fixed by methylmethacrylate is used widely.
Fixation of the acetabular cup on the acetabulum in total hip replacement needs destruction of bone up to `cancellous bone layer for acetabular reaming.which forces delay in surgical process and induces considerable bleeding.
However report on fixability by reaming up to. subschondral bone or articular cartilagenous layer, instead of cancellous bone layer have been difficult to find.
The author performed an experiment to understand fixability and change of the bone- and the regeneration process following acrylic bone cement fixation applied to different level of, bone destruction such as superficial articular cartilagenous layer, subchondral bone layer and cancellous bone layer, repectively, in the Group-J, Group II and .Group III.
For the study, 96 patellae were obtained from 48 adult rabbits which were divided into three-i T groups, giving injuries and applying-the bone cement to them respectively. Macro-and microscopic examinations were performed at the intervals of one, two, three, four, six, eight, twelve and sixteen weeks after the surgical manipulation.
The results obtained are as follows._
1. Good fixation were obtained in both groups of injury to the subchondral bone layer and to :the,;:. cancellous bone layer by the fixation with the bone cement throughout the different durations 4orl,-1. repair of the bones.
There showed not enough fixability of the bone cement in the group of injury to :the., _super$ y` l t
